How to Solve Our Puzzles

Basic Sudoku Rules

The rules of Sudoku are: You must use all numbers, 1-9 in each square. But you must also use all numbers, 1-9 across each row and down each column.

You can start with the square, row or column with the most numbers, and figure out what goes in the empty spaces.

In our example, the middle square on the bottom row has all nine numbers. The left square on the bottom row has almost all of the numbers. By process of elimination, we know the missing number must be 3, since all of the other numbers are used.

The second row from the bottom is missing one number. We can determine that the missing number must be 4, since all of the other numbers across that row are taken.

Now we can complete the second column from the right. We filled in the 4, so we're only missing the 6. That goes in the middle square on the left, between the 9 and 3.

Then we can fill in the number on that same row between that 9 and the 4 to the left of it. That number must be 5.

We keep going like that until all of the squares, rows and columns are complete and have all nine numbers.

How to Play 5X Sudoku

The rules of Sudoku are: You must use all numbers, 1-9 in each square. But you must also use all numbers, 1-9 across each row and down each column.

For 5X Sudoku, you have four regular Sudoku puzzles and a fifth square in the middle.

The same rules apply, but you have the added complication of the center square which overlaps the other four.

You can start with the square, row or column with the most numbers, and figure out what goes in the empty spaces.

For our example, we're going to start with the top left square, top row. We're missing the fourth number across, which would be 9. We can enter 7 in the bottom row of that same square. Then we can work on each of the smaller squares to solve that large square.

You'll solve each of the 4 outside squares, then complete the center square. (Or you can solve in any order that works for you.)

This type of Sudoku is more complicated, but it's a fun 5X challenge for those who love Sudoku!

How to Play Circles Sudoku

The rules of Sudoku are: You must use all numbers, 1-9 in each square. But you must also use all numbers, 1-9 across each row and down each column.

For Circles Sudoku, the same rules apply, but instead of squares, you have rows and sections! It works the same way, but it's a brain twister!

For Circles Sudoku, a standard Sudoku puzzle has been transformed into nine concentric circles with wedge sections and three division.

Each ring represents a row, starting from the middle and working outward. So in our example, the center ring would be the top row of a square Sudoku. So that row would be 3,7,-, 8,6,-,-,4, -.

The second ring would be row 2, with numbers 4,-,5, -, 9, -,6, -, -.

There are nine triangular sections which represent the nine columns, starting with section 1 and going around clockwise. The center number would be at the top of the column. So Section 1 would be column one in a square Sudoku. So reading from the top, column one would be 3,4,-, 7,-, -,9, -,6. Section 2, or column 2 would be 7, -, -, -, -, 9, -, -, -.

The rings are divided into three sections, moving from the center to the outside. The center section, rings 1-3 represent the top three squares in a regular Sudoku. The next section, rings 4-6 are the middle three squares and the three outside rings are the bottom three squares.

You solve the Circles Sudoku puzzles just like you would a Regular Sudoku, only the squares are circles.

In our books, we include a blank Sudoku Grid with every Easy Circles Sudoku, so you can plot it out, until you get used to them.

How to Play Crooked Sudoku

The rules of Sudoku are: You must use all numbers, 1-9 in each square. But you must also use all numbers, 1-9 across each row and down each column.

For Crooked Sudoku, the same rules apply, but instead of squares, you have crooked sections that add up to the number in the top left corner. The "squares" will still have numbers 1-9, but the crooked sections may cross over into more than one "square."

For crooked Sudoku, there are no numbers in the grid to start with. Instead, you figure out the numbers by finding the small number in the top left corner of each dotted, "crooked," area . The numbers in the sections must add up to that total.

In our sample, the top right corner has the number 5 in the top left corner. The dashed lines show only one box, so if that one box has to equal 5, then we know to enter 5 in that box. The same with the top left corner, which shows the number 1, so we enter 1 there. Then 2 in the next box. So now we have 1, 2, -,-,-,-,-,-.5 for the top row (if this was a standard Sudoku.)

Now we can solve other crooked sections in the top left square. So we have a 1 and a 2 already. We have a crooked section that totals 11 and a crooked section that totals 22. Let's start with the 11. Since we can't use 1 or 2, what other two numbers add up to 11? And what four numbers could add up to 22? We also have to pay attention to the two squares that make up the crooked section that totals 12. One of the numbers will be part of the top left square and on will be part of the middle left square!
